1960 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD II STANDARD STEEL SALOON

Although it closely resembled the first series of Silver Clouds, the Silver Cloud II, introduced in September 1959, marked the beginning of a new era for the Rolls-Royce motor car company. In response to demands for greater power, particularly in the face of competition from bigger, smoother-engined American rivals, Rolls-Royce designed an all-new, light alloy 6,250cc V8 for the Cloud II. It was compact and no heavier than the straight six unit it replaced, and consequently, had a dramatic effect on the car's performance. Top speed was increased from about 100mph to 115mph and the acceleration became equal to that of a respectable sports car. All this was achieved with hardly any increase in fuel consumption. Also added to the specification over and above the previous model were passenger-aimed air vents at either end of the dashboard and a reduced diameter steering wheel thanks to power steering now being offered as a standard feature.

Given the right hand drive designation, this example was clearly not originally intended for the US market. The current owner is reported to have purchased the car in the early 1980s within California but prior history is unknown at present. When recently inspected the car presented well and started without fail, selected gears with ease and though not driven on the road it appeared well-mannered; indeed, the current owner has used the Cloud on many local events much to the delight of adoring onlookers.

The beneficiary of an older repaint to a good standard, it was identified in places that the car could originally have been painted dark blue but it must be said that the striking silver livery coupled with a 'Golde' retractable sunroof make the car seem much more suited to sunny California motoring, especially when offset by whitewall tires. While the odometer reading (when inspected) of 47,708 miles cannot be verified as original from new, the interior would hint that figure to be in keeping with the expected use such mileage would warrant. By recommendation a sympathetic effort would be advised to rejuvenate the leather and give it the supple texture one would expect.

A sound example throughout, this elegant British luxury cruiser is ideal for touring, runs very well and is worthy of consideration. This Silver Cloud II has spent much of the last few years garaged and thus is being offered for sale with the proceeds to benefit 'Pets Lifeline', a local nonprofit animal shelter in Sonoma that helps to care for and find homes for abandoned pets in the area.
