1960 VOLKSWAGEN 'DROPSIDE' SINGLE CAB PICKUP TRUCK

Unquestionably among the most innovative designs of the day, the Volkswagen 'Dropside' Pickup trucks stretched the definition of full service utility vehicles. Production of the Volkswagen 'Dropside' truck was started in 1954, borrowing its chassis from the Microbus and employing the front section and split window as the major design features. Perhaps one of the most innovative attributes was the dropside panels of the single cab's 5ft x 9ft truck bed. By dropping the hinged sides and tailgate, the entire floor of the bed could be exposed providing a great deal of practical storage space which was easily accessible from either side. While over one million Volkswagen trucks, or transporters, were manufactured these single cab examples have become increasingly rare as only a limited number appear to remain today in this distinctive configuration.
The 'Dropside' Pickup on offer here appears to be in very presentable overall condition and benefited from a thorough and professional restoration in the 1990's when it was in the care of the famed Blackhawk Collection. Having seen a few owners since, this example has enjoyed limited mileage and fastidious care, and most recently the engine was treated to a full rebuild by Volkswagen specialist Bob Donald at Boston Engine Company.
This Volkswagen 'Dropside' Pickup truck possesses a very well-planned design; unlike today's market, which tends to indicate that as the truck grows larger, the actual bed and usable space must grow smaller, the Volkswagen Pickup stayed small and had a bed as big as a contemporary long bed Ford or Chevy pickup. Yet, in the late 1960s with its drop down side panels, the pickup could be instantly expanded to fit a mattress, ten hippies and a bongo - or possibly a Formula One race car with it's nose removed!
This VW deserves close attention for its rarity, lovely overall condition and unlimited owner use potential.
