Lot Essay

The present lot shows a group of officials visiting the Prinsenkapel at the Grote Kerk in Breda. This grave monument, made of alabaster and marble and dating from the early 1530's, is attributed to the sculptor Jean Mone and is considered to be one of the finest examples of early Renaissance sculpture in the Netherlands. Four kneeling figures, each a classical military hero, carry the harness of Count Engelbrecht II who is laid underneath with his wife Cimburga von Baden.
The figure on the left is likely to be Engelbrecht's descendant King Willem II who had in fact died the year before the present work was painted. One of the brothers Van der Laar is shown to the right of the monument, having just gotten to his feet out of respect for the King who is symbolically shown paying tribute to his ancestors.
