Lot Essay

The candlebranches display Arcadian satyr heads such as featured in the engraved ornament issued in the early 18th century by the sculptor/carver Jean Bernard Toro (d.1731) in Livre de Tables de diverses formes (reissued in London in 1745 under the title, Masks and Other Ornmanets). Similar masks appear on tables associated with the George II cabinet-maker John Channon (C.Gilbert and T.Murdoch, John Channon and brass-inlaid furniture, London, 1883, figs 85 and 86), and also feature to the lower angles of a brass octagonal lantern supplied by Benjamin Goodison, between 1729 and 1733, for the Queen's Great Staircase, Hampton Court Palace.
