Lot Essay

Kilkenny marble: Black marble is found in County Kilkenny, which also produces a fosil marble. The principle marble mills were situated on the River Nore, two miles south of Kilkenny. The Kilkenny marble mills instanced what was believed to have been the first known example of sawing marble other than by hand in 1730.
