Lot Essay
The first is a George II design for a chimneypiece with gothic pillars and fret-arcaded frieze enriched with foliage and corresponds to the architecture of an 'umbrello' garden-seat in B.& T.Langley's Ancient Architecture Restored, 1742 (pl.51). The latter also included a Chimneypiece pattern with gothic pointed arch (pl.41).
The second design is for a chimneypiece with pointed and foliated arch and also relates to a pattern in B.& T.Langley's Ancient Architecture Restored, 1742 (pl.42).
Two chimneypieces likely to have originated from the same source, are illustrated in P.Fuhring Drawings for Architecture and Ornament, 1989, vol.1, nos.427 and 428.
