Lot Essay

The tablets above the pilasters of the antique fluted chimneypiece display beribboned trophies combining Cupids weapons with Hymens torch; while the central tablet displays a sacred urn emerging from flower scrolls of Roman acanthus. The latter, in the Roman fashion popularised by George III's court architect Robert Adam (d.1792) relates to one illustrated in I.& J.Taylor's Designs for Chimneypieces circa 1775, (pl.13)
