Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) was a New York lawyer who served as treasurer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1909 through 1929. He traveled to Japan in 1898. His collection of 300 ukiyo-e prints as well as fine Japanese lacquer, painting, pottery, swords, furniture and textiles was acquired by the Metropolitan in 1936 as a combined gift and purchase. This screen was a gift to the museum from his widow.
