Lot Essay

Three of the paintings are album leaves with scenes from the Tale of Genji. At the center is chapter 2 (Hahakigi, "The Broom Tree") with Genji and his friends gathered on a rainy night to talk about women. At the right is chapter 5 (Wakamurasaki, "Young Murasaki"), where Genji first sees the young girl whom he will take as his wife. At the left is chapter 12 (Suma) with Genji in exile at Suma on the Inland Sea.
