Having served successfully in the East India seas, he was ordered to pilot a squadron through the Molucas. In 1800 he was appointed to the Inflexible and in 1805 transferred to the Trident. He commanded the sea fencibles of Harwich on his return to England and from 1812-1815, the Puissant guardship at Spithead. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1819, Vice Admiral and Admiral in 1841
