Lot Essay

Birds and flowers as a genre was established early in the history of painting in China. Small animals and woody plants, as well as birds and flowers proper, are included. Korean hwacho paintings always depict the birds and animals in pairs. Each pair serves as a symbol of happy marriage and fidelity.
