Lot Essay

The Vatican 'Loggia' was commissioned by the Medici Pope Leo X and was executed by Giulio Romano and Giovanni da Udine, under the supervision of Raphael from 1518-19. It is made up of thirteen bays, each vault consisting of four panels, surrounded by trompe l'oeil architecture and sky painted above. Each of the central panels depicts narratives from the Old Testament, with the exception of the final bay which includes scenes from the life of Jesus, one of which depicts 'The Last Supper' (included in this lot). Other Biblical figures represented in the remaining vaults include Noah and Isaac (also included in this lot). The figural scenes were painted by Giulio Romano, and Giovanni da Udine was responsible for the stuccowork.
