Lot Essay

These banqueting hall chairs are designed in the late 19th century romantic medieaval manner, with rusticated columnar legs, busts of courtly jesters and maidens framed in their Gothic arched crestings and golden thistles emblazoned on the dragon-guarded shields of their embossed leather. Patterns for related chairs designed by A. Harthan were published in Blatter für Kunstgewerbe, Vienna, 1887.
