FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, PROBABLY BOUND IN ITS PLACE OF PUBLICATION. The map is in the second state with the words 'Mar Pacifico' added. Serra and fifteen other Franciscan friars including Palou were sent to Lower California in 1767. Serra proceeded to establish the upper mission the following year, while Palou took charge of the lower. The latter's life of Serra was based on letters written to him by the illustrious Franciscan and forms a history of the first nine missions, San Diego to San Buenaventura, which he founded, while also providing interesting details of the various Indian tribes and descriptions of the country.
