Uniform calf gilt, covers with double-fillet border, spines in six compartments with double raised bands, green/brown morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, marbled endpapers and edges (old damage to leather on the upper cover of vol.II). FIRST EDITIONS OF BOTH WORKS. Lowndes called the first work 'the most interesting and important work yet published on the subject of African reseaches'. Howgego 1800-1850 C33, C34 and D18; Lowndes I, p.629 (first work only).

Contemporary straight-grained calf by J. Bohn of London, covers with border of a gilt single fillet flanked by roll-tools in blind, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (light scuffing too extremities, small split to lower cover).
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. 'The authenticity of the following letters cannot be questioned. They were written by the sister of the late Richard Tully, Esq. his Britannic Majesty's Consul at the Court of Tripoly, between whose family and that of the Bashaw, it will be seen that the closest intimacy subsisted for many years' (Preface p.iii). Miss Tully was a 'well-bred English spinster [who] spent her time in north Africa visiting the royal family, politely congratulating the Bashaw on his fine harem and collection of Christian slaves' (Robinson p. 248).
