ALEXANDRE M. RAYMOND (fl. c.1908-1933)
L'Art islamique en Orient, parts I and II, comprising:
A.M. RAYMOND (artist) and Karl WULZINGER (1886-1948). Vieilles faïences turques en Asie Mineure et à Constantinople [part I]. [S.l.: s.n., ?1922, text dated 5 November 1921 at the end]. 2° (490 x 350mm). 36 colour-printed plates after Raymond, 4 double-page. (Variable light spotting on text leaves, heavier on first 4, occasional very light spotting on plates, a few plates with short, skilfully-repaired marginal tears.) Original cloth-backed mottled boards, upper board printed in colours with title and islamicate design (A few light marks and scuffs, extremities lightly rubbed and bumped). FIRST FRENCH EDITION. Cf. Creswell col. 445 (German edition).
A.M. RAYMOND. L'Art islamique en Orient. II: Partie [Fragments d'architecture religieuse et civile]. Pera, Constantinople: M. Schulz, Prague for Librairie Raymond, 1924. 2° (490 x 355mm). Chromolithographic and gold-printed dedication leaf and title, both retaining tissue guards, 52 chromolithographic plates, some also printed in gold, 9 double-page, lithographic illustrations printed in colours, after Raymond. (Some plates very lightly browned and/or creased at margins, dedication and title with minor creases at edges affecting image.) Loose as issued in original portfolio, outer covers with chromolithographic and gold-printed boards, inner covers and upper and lower flaps with applied chromolithographic and gold-printed panels, original ties (outer covers lightly marked, minor chips and rubbing). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 'A VERY ATTRACTIVE BOOK' (Atabey). Atabey 1015; Creswell col. 445.
FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF PART I AND FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF PART II. A RARE SET OF BOTH PUBLISHED PARTS OF L'ART ISLAMIQUE EN ORIENT, RAYMOND'S FINE SERIES OF PLATES, which depict ceramics employed in architectural decoration and ceramic artefacts (part I) and the mosques of Konia, Brousse, Sivas, Constantinople, Yeni-Cheir, Iznik, and elsewhere, and details of their architecture and decoration (part II). Although Atabey states that 'Apparently the first part never appeared', Raymond and Wulzinger's Vieilles faïences turques en Asie Mineur et à Constantinople is listed in the bibliography that appears on p.11 of part II as 'L'Art islamique en Orient. Ière Partie. Vieilles faïences turques en Asie Mineur et à Constantinople [...] 1922', indicating that Raymond applied the series title to the first work retrospectively (a German edition of part I was also published under the title Alttürkische Keramik in Kleinasien und Konstantinopel (Munich: 1922)). A third volume in the series was evidently projected--advertised on the lower wrapper of Raymond's Une ville célèbre Angora (s.l.: printed in Prague by M. Schulz, c.1926) as L'Art islamique en Orient part III and described as 'sous presse'--but no copy can be traced, indicating that it was never published. Sets of the French edition of parts I and II are rare at auction: no copies of either part I alone or parts I and II together are recorded by ABPC since 1975 and only two copies of part II are listed.
