Lot Essay

Nicolaus Michael Spengler Hofglasmaler was born on the 28th of December 1700. Under landgrave Ludwig VIII (1691 - 1768) Spengler excecuted two glass paintings for Jagdschloss Kranichstein. Jagdschloss Kranichstein is the huntinglodge of the landgraves and the later grand dukes Von Hessen-Darmstadt situated north of Darmstadt, now Museum Jagdschloss Kranichstein. Spengler is also known for his copies after the work of the German painter Johann Tobias Sonntag (1716 - 1774). On the 4th of April 1776 Spengler died in Darmstadt.
