Lot Essay

This giltwood pier glass or damspiegel with conforming console table, originally placed between a pair of windows and embellished with sharp C-scroll and foliate carving, represents the decorative vocabulary of the Dutch rococo. A design of a related mirror is illustrated in R. Baarsen et.al., Rococo in Nederland, Amsterdam n.d. p. 21. A related overmantel mirror, decorated in a similar vein, which is still in the regentenkamer of the Fundatie van Renswoude in Utrecht, is illustrated in R. Baarsen et.al., Rococo in Nederland, 'Een rococo interieur: de regentenkamer van de Fundatie van Renswoude', Amsterdam, n.d. p. 39.
