A LARGE DATED BROWN-GROUND COROMANDEL TWELVE-PANEL SCREEN
DATED TO THE YIHAI YEAR OF KANGXI, CORRESPONDING TO 1695, AND OF THE PERIOD
The twelve panels are intricately carved on one side with court ladies pursuing leisurely activities both inside and outside the palace, some ladies are at their vanity table, some are playing music on their flutes and some are dancing, others are crossing a bridge, sitting in a dragon boat or riding horses, all within a frame of key pattern and floral scroll borders at the edges, the top panels decorated with antiques and auspicious objects, the reverse carved with a lengthy inscription including a dedicatory birthday greeting to Mr. Fu, the two end panels with a pair of writhing four-clawed dragons emerging from ruyi-form cloud clusters
7 ft. 10 in. (238.8 cm.) high, 18 ft. 1½ in. (552 cm.) long

Lot Essay

According to the inscription on the reverse, which is dated to the yihai year of the reign of Kangxi (1695), the screen is dedicated to Mr. Fu, the governor of his home town, on the occasion of his birthday, and was written by Zheng Kaiji, an archivist of the Department of Historical Records at the National Academy and senior examiner of imperial examinations.
