Lot Essay
The presence of the naturalistically painted leaf from which the flowers issue, and the trefoils around the exterior lend this design its distinctive character.
Compare with five published examples, all of approximately the same size. The first of 36.8 cm. diam., from the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, is illustrated in Mingdai chunian ciqi tezhan mulu, (Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Early Ming Dynasty Ceramics), Taipei, 1984, no. 40. Two dishes are in the Ardebil Shrine; one illustrated by T. Misugi, Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East, Hong Kong, 1981, p. 122, A38 (measuring 38.7 cm.), and the other illustrated by J. Alexander Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, Washington, 1956, pl. 34 (39 cm.). The fourth is illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. 1, Japan, 1976, p. 250, no. 754. The fifth example was included in the Stockholm Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities exhibition catalogue, Ming Blue and White from Swedish Collections, 1964, no. 17; and subsequently became part of the British Rail Pension Fund, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 16 May 1989, lot 17.
