Lot Essay

A trip to Kashmir in 1948 marked a new shift in Raza's painting style. There he met photographer Henri Cartier Bresson who suggested that Raza study the compositions of Paul Cezanne. Taking cues from Mughal miniatures and the famed Post-Impressionist, this resulted in a collage of forms and multiple perspectives within his landscapes and cityscapes.
