Lot Essay
Avinash Chandra, like fellow expatriate, Francis Newton Souza, left India for Britain in 1956. Becoming one of the first Indian artists to achieve an international reputation, he was profiled by art historian, W.G. Archer in a 1962 BBC documentary and received much critical acclaim. This 1958 work marks a transitional phase in Chandra's painting style which moves towards a looser more expressionistic style in the 1960s (see lot 294). Compare to another painting of similar scale and date in B. Khanna and A. Kurtha, Art of Modern India, London, 1998, p. 74.
