Lot Essay

The enigmatic title suggests that this narrative painting is a representation of a Panchayat session depicting a group of rural women deliberating. Painted with a heavy impasto, the painting has a strong visual and tactile quality employing techniques Husain developed throughout his 1960s era works; compare to another work of village women with similar imagery, painted in 1968 entitled Ritual in R. Bartholomew and S. Kapur, Husain, New York, 1972, cat. no. 173.
