A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THE MOST RECENT BOTTLINGS OF PENFOLD'S LEGENDARY SINGLE VINEYARD AND SPECIAL BIN WINES

Penfolds 2004 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon, is a wine made from the Barossa Valley block planted in the 1880s, which is the oldest known Cabernet vineyard in the world. The second wine,Penfolds 2004 Bin 60A Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, Kalimna Shiraz, is modeled on the famous 1962 Bin 60A, a wine hailed by famous Australian wine critic, James Halliday, as "...arguably the greatest Australian red wine made in the 20th Century." Andri Tchelistcheff, one of the founding fathers of the Californian wine industry, once instructed a group of Napa Valley winegrowers, "Gentleman, you will all stand in the presence of this wine."

The wines are made from old vineyards and are testament to Penfolds history of experimentation, while still maintaining time tested winemaking methods. As Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker, notes, "The 2004 Penfolds Block 42 and 2004 Penfolds Bin 60A are both impressively concentrated wines with tremendous balance and character. Indeed they are destined to become important Penfolds classics."

This auction represents the first opportunity for consumers to acquire these limited release wines. The winning bidder will have the following lots held at Christie's warehouse until the time of delivery of the specialised labels and cases to be made especially for this release. The owner will have 6 actual bottles of each of the wines held for their collection or delivery.

2004 Vintage
The release of 2004 Special Bin wines was made possible by the selection of a few "perfect" parcels of grapes from Penfolds Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley and Block 20 vineyard in Coonawarra. Peter Gago notes that "2004 is proving to be a very strong vintage for Penfolds. Some astonishingly good parcels of Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon, Kalimna Shiraz and Block 20 Cabernet Sauvignon were selected for special attention. The fruit all showed tremendous aromatics, flavour definition and texture without being compromised by excessive Baume levels."

2004 Penfolds Bin 60A Coonawarra Cabernet, Kalimna Shiraz
This wine is a homage to 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Shiraz. The original Bin 60A played a defining role in establishing Australia's credentials as a fine wine producer. It brought attention to the benefits of cross regional blending and in part established the quintessential Australian wine blend of Cabernet and Shiraz. The 2004 Bin 60A is not only a reminder of this great wine, but also a statement about Penfolds superb vineyard resources, teamwork and winemaking skills of today.
