ACOSTA, Manuel (1540-1604). Rerum a Societate Iesu in oriente gestarum ad annum usque ... MDLXVIII, translated and augmented by Giovanni Pietro Maffei. Dillingen: Sebaldus Mayer, 1571. 2 parts in one volume, 8° (153 x 91mm). (Title slightly ink-stained and with Jesuit stamp, a few leaves with short marginal tears.) Contemporary pigskin panelled in blind, 18th-century lettering-piece (extremities worn, upper joints cracked). FIRST EDITION, translated from the manuscript entitled 'Historia dos Missiones de Oriente até o anno de 1568' by the Portuguese Jesuit historian, Manuel Acosta, who taught at Coimbra. The Latin translation had been prepared for publication by Maffei who added material to the second part, 'De Iaponicis rebus epistolarum libri IIII'. This contains abridgements of letters from Jesuits working in Japan up to 1564. Often reprinted, the work added significantly to Western perceptions of the East. RARE. Cordier Japonica 58; cf.
