Lot Essay

Tirukalikundran (Tirukkalikkunran) contains an important late Vijayanagar and Nayak period temple a few miles inland from the ancient site of Mahabalipuram on the coast. It is linked to the smaller shrine on top of the hill where sacred kites are fed every day by priests before devotees. The Daniells reached here in October 1792 (William's journal for this part of the journey has not survived) on their way back to Madras after their southern tour, but no drawings of it have survived. The picture was misidentified by Maurice Shellim, op.cit, as one of Daniell's 1816 exhibits at the Royal Academy A View near Sautputtee, in the Tinnevelly District, East Indies.
