Lot Essay

This painting compares closely with 36 miniatures from a Ragamala series from the Johnson Album 37, all illustrated in Toby Falk's and Mildred Archers', Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, London, Delhi and Karachi, 1981, no.426i-xxxvi, pp.426-514. The present painting shares many features with this series: the slightly elongated figures, the bright colours, the Persianate treatment of the carpets and patterning, and the heightened sense of architectural perspective.
