Lot Essay

At the end of his studies, Korovin was made the theatre designer for the Sava Mamontov in Moscow. From there he made sets and costumes for the Imperial Ballet and Imperial Theatre. He then travelled, working in Munich, then to the Paris Opera and the Opera House in Covent Garden, London. He was one of the first artists to utilise Impressionism in this type of work. Korovine's most creative and successful period was up to 1917. In later years he started to paint in a faster looser style which was regarded as less impressive than his earlier work.
