Trist, 2 January 1892 (armorial bookplate and inscription on front free endpaper) -- Vernon James Watney, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire (1860-1928, bibliophile and art collector, gilt morocco book label, by descent to his son:) -- Oliver Vernon Watney (d. 1966, his sale, Christie's, 7-8 June 1967, lot 185).
EARLY PRINTING OF DRAKE'S FIRST WEST INDIAN VOYAGE. As issued, this formed part I of vol. III Sir Francis Drake Revived printed by Bourne in 1652, 1653 which included The World Encompassed and Another Voyage into the West Indies. It is without the first English edition dedication of 1589 signed by the editor Thomas Cates. Although the work was begun by Bigges, an officer under Drake, it was finished after his death, probably by his lieutenant, Master Croftes. Drake's 1585-86 expedition to the Spanish Indies was the first major British naval foray into the Caribbean and was sanctioned by a commission from Queen Elizabeth with letters of marque. As well as capturing and sacking a number of cities he also rescued the 103 colonists remaining on Raleigh's Roanoke Island Virginia colony and returned them to England along with a shipment of potatoes and tobacco. Church Catalogue 526; Sabin 20843, 20840.
