ADAM JOHANN VON KRUSENSTERN (1770-1846)

Beyträge zur Hydrographie der Grössern Ozeane als Erläuterungen zu einer Charte des ganzen Erdkreises nach Mercator's Projection. Leipzig: Paul Gotthelf Kummer, 1819. 4° (245 x 210mm). Dedication, half-title and errata leaf; pp. 33-36 in two states, the corrected leaves bound at p. 246-247. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary half sheep over marbled boards (lightly rubbed, skilfully rebacked and recornered). Provenance: small inkstamps on title.

VERY RARE. A FINE COPY OF THE SOLE EDITION of Krusenstern's nation of his world map Allgemeine Welt Charte (London: 1815), which was first issued in the atlas to the German first edition of his world voyage of 1803-1806 (St Petersburg: 1814). This text volume stands on its own as a precise consolidation of world hydrographic knowledge and sailing directions, especially of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, including the North Pacific coasts of Asia and America, by the man called the 'Hydrographer of the Pacific'. The second, corrected state of pp. 33-36 is not noted by Lada-Mocarski or Howes, although they contain updated notices on the voyages of John Barrow, David Buchan and John Ross in the Arctic. Howes confuses this work with Krusenstern's Recueil de mémoires hydrographiques de l'Océan Pacifique (St Petersburg: 1824), but the Beyträge is an entirely separate work, written to accompany his world map. The map was issued separately, and was later corrected and issued with the Russian first edition of Kotzebue's Voyage (St Petersburg: 1823). Lada-Mocarski 77; Forbes 500; Wickersham 6228; Howes K271; Sabin 38327, 38328; Arctic Bibliography 9376.
