Château La Mission-Haut-Brion--Vintage 1961
Talence (Graves), cru classé
Levels: nine top and three upper/top shoulder; two cut capsules to verify château vintage branding, two slightly depressed corks, nine bin soiled labels, three slightly torn labels
Tasting note from a representative bottle from this cellar: Saturated color with an ever so slight turning of color at the edge. Powerful aromatics, rich and dense. Upon initial pour the attack is intense, minerally, but tight as a carpenters clamp. It needs time to open. Later: baked brown sugar (this is a familiar note with me regarding many great '61s), perhaps molassas to others, more minerals than a rock slide. Its overall structure is massive. Lowish acidity and finishes dry and masculine. Flavors of bitter chocolate, iron and sweet molassas like fruit...in more time a hint of forest floor. Lest it not be clear this remains as one of the finest '61 I've tasted. In this vintage it is completely different than its stablemate from across the road, that being Haut Brion. A terrific powerhouse of a wine from the year Man lept into outerspace. Many years of life ahead. ST
