Vintage 1970
The consistency of the 1970 which combined a large quantity with high quality continually proves itself to be the most successful vintage between the 1961 and 1982. With opportune timing, the rich, full and balanced 1970s are partially responsible for the wine boom that followed. Nearly perfect weather conditions - no hail, great heat with some rain in the late summer, and a long, hot ripening period - resulted in these full bodied and complex Bordeauxs. From early on, the wines displayed an impressively dark color, rich, fruit fragrance, tannin, and fullness. Later on, wines from all of the appellations have proven to age elegantly throughout the decades. Their abundance and fineness continues to make them a popular choice.
Vintage 1971
A relatively small but good quality, very high priced vintage. Coming at the top of the overheated market, it was overrated by the Bordelais and has been underrrated by the British. Many Wines have turned out far better than the '70s. The weather conditons appeared to favour producers on the Right Bank, especially Pomerol, and in the Graves. Some top growth Médoc have turned our poorly, yet they were the most expensive of the period.

"The dark garnet, rust-rimmed 1970 Pétrus has developed magnificently over the last 4-5 years. Tight and reserved early in life, it has blossomed into a true blockbuster. This massive, highly-extracted, full-bodied, jammy, thick, unctuously-textured wine possesses a huge, spice, tobacco, black cherry, mocha-scented nose. It is a real turn-on. The wine is fully mature, but it has at least 20 years of life remaining. This spectacular Pétrus is now superior to the 1971, which out-performed it for nearly two decades. Owners of this wine have a true nectar in their cellars." Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition
