With dessert, a bottle of CHATEAU D'YQUEM 1967 was the choice. Noblesse oblige!

Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1967
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Lot 240 levels: one very top and one top shoulder; lightly bin soiled labels. Lot 241 levels: bottom neck or better; one lightly bin soiled label, otherwise in excellent condition
Lot 241 in original wooden case
The '67 Yquem is legendary and widely known as Comte Alexandre de Lur Saluces' first major vintage. What a tremendous start to a career! Harvest conditions were superlative for the sweet whites, early September rains with sunny conditions towards the end of the month created and enviroment beneficial, indeed necessary, to produce great Sauternes. All of the top estates, Rieussec, Suduiraut, Guiraud and Climens, excelled with tremendous wines in the early fall of 1967. Château d'Yquem tops them all in bouquet, power and finesse. Tasted twice in 2003, once from half bottle, another base neck standard bottle at Dr. Conti's remarkable Château Latour dinner in Los Angeles, with discussion from our very own Anthony Hanson. Deep orange hues with a brilliant radiance. A tremendous nose, oh what volume! Intense botrytis nose of honey and dried apricots; lemon & orange blossom. Vibrant acidity cuts the viscosity keeping the wine fresh and not one bit tiresome on the palate. With time in glass candied orange rind, carmelized honey, peach and pear make their appearance followed by sweet tea-leaf like flavors. Great balance, superb viscosity. Heavenly. No major signs of decay or decline. ST
