...Overall: full marks went to all except the Echézeaux. Partially for mustiness. Could be a bad bottle. This tasting was a once in a life time feast. Every one of these wines was a bonne bouche (sic) in its own right! In retrospect, even though we all picked the Grs Ech [Grands Echézeaux] as best, I would no put it above any wine but the Ech. At 11:30 [PM] the R-C had finally bloomed and both Charlotte & Mya picked it as best. Perhaps I would rate them in this order after several hours of breathing: R-C, Richebourg, La Tâche, Grs Ech & Ech...

La Tâche--Vintage 1962
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Levels: two 3cm, three 4cm, two 4.5cm, three 5cm and one 5.5cm; three nicked labels, all heavy bin soiled labels; non-consecutive serial numbers
"Most recently, at a dinner party at home: level 4cm below cork; medium-deep, open, fully mature colour; 'scented beetroot' nose; rich, fabulous, perfection. Amoung my guests were Len Evans who rightly prides himself on his palate and (Lord) Rudolf Russell. All the wines were served blind -- they included a typically idiosyncratic '49 Château Chalon, L Latour's '85 Corton-Charlemagne, the great '78 Barca Velha, my favorite '85 Ch Cheval Blanc and '35 Taylor. To Len's chagrin, he was trounced every time by Rudolf and had to resort to suggesting that a duke's son had had an unfair flying start, being brought up with this class of wine! Lasted tasted at our London flat, June 2000 ****** (6 stars)." MB, Vintage Wine
