A rare Japanese large Imari bottle vase
19TH CENTURY
The globular body decorated in iron-red, yellow, blue, black and green enamels and gilt, with a rectangular panel containing a group of Dutchmen in conversation, their attention focused on a central figure in a long cape, their faces looking forlorn, the reverse with a four-masted ship contained in a border of stylised ho-o bird wings, the bird with its wing feathers outstretched above the masts, the panels divided by peony and chrysanthemum flower-heads amongst scrolling foliage, the tall cylindrical neck with further stylised flowers and terminating in a lipped everted rim
