Lot Essay

Solo Keling, also known as Java Rosewood or Indian Blackwood, was mainly used in India and Java. This type of chair like many of its counterparts were inspired on European models. A virtually identical chair remains in the Historical Museum of Jakarta (Musuem Sejarah Jakarta) and is illustrated in J. Veenendaal, Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, during the Dutch period, Delft, 1985, p. 94, pl. 96.
