Lot Essay

Lady Mary Villiers, Duchess of Richmond (d.1685), was the only daughter of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. She married first Lord Herbert, who died shortly thereafter and secondly James Stuart, 1st Duke of Richmond and 4th Duke of Lennox (1612-1655), (see lot 13) by whom she had a son Esme Stuart, 5th Duke of Richmond and Lennox, and a daughter, Mary, who married Richard, Earl of Arran. She married thirdly Thomas Howard, brother of Charles, Earl of Carlisle, but had no issue.
