A COPTIC WOOL AND LINEN WOVEN HANGING PANEL
4TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
Woven with weft-loop pile, depicting two standing facing figures, their hands raised in prayer, one wearing belted purple tunic over trousers with cloak around his shoulders, the other wearing longer yellow tunic with white mantle, each with headband, on red background, 24 x 19¼ in. (61 x 49 cm.) max.; a monochrome woven textile fragment comprising joined twin clavi, each with central interlaced roundel, decorated overall with scattered stylized figures of huntsmen, animals and birds, with crenellated border, later cut and joined centrally, circa 5th-6th Century A.D., 24 x 12¼ in. (61 x 31 cm.) max.; and two border fragments woven with coloured weft-loop pile, each with recently added details of a figure including face and feet, 4th-6th Century A.D. and later, each 21½ x 16½ in. (52 x 42 cm.) approx. (4)
