The powerfully modelled nude torso showing detailed musculature and genitalia, fitted into the lower body with cloak falling over his thighs and legs, his sandalled feet emerging from below, he sits on a stepped throne with crossed sides, lower part of left arm restored

Lot Essay

The Danish painter and sculptor, Jens Adolf Jerichau, worked with Thorvaldsen in Rome where he formed his collection of antique sculpture. The above statue was purchased at auction in 1884 by the Danish professor of philosophy, Claudius Wilkens.
