MAINLY 1ST-3RD CENTURY A.D. AND 4TH-8TH CENTURY A.D.
For cosmetic and medical use, including scoop-probes, ear-probes, spatula-probes, five tweezers, hooks, a tinned bronze spoon with circular bowl, oval spoons, and a probable cataract-couching needle, some of the instruments with olivary terminals, turned ornamentation and twisted shafts, and a group of six Near Eastern pins(a lot)

Provenance
Acquired by Professor Henry Hofman in the mid-1940s to mid-1950s and bequested to the M. Th. Houtsma Foundation; sold by the Foundation in 1989 and acquired by the present owner.

Henry Hofman was Professor of Turkish and Altaic Studies at Utrecht University in the 1960s-1970s. He was interested in and published scientific texts in Chaghatay, and it was in this connection that he also collected Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic medical instruments.
