Details
HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)

Document signed (with the left hand, 'Horatio Nelson'), a receipt for 'Twenty Seven Pounds Eighteen Shilling & Ninepence' from Messrs Cooke and Halford, n.p. [London], 2 December 1797, one page, 73 x 188mm.

AN EARLY EXAMPLE OF NELSON'S SIGNATURE WRITTEN WITH THE LEFT HAND, while convalescing after the loss of his right arm at Santa Cruz on 24 July 1797. He describes the payment as 'my Proportion as Rear Admiral for the Teresa prize' and as a flag officer was entitled to a share of any prizes won by any member of the fleet whose command he shared. The Teresa does not appear to have been among the enemy vessels which he took himself in the summer of that year. By early December his arm had healed, and he posted a notice in St George's, Hanover Square announcing his recovery. On the 13th the Navy doctors declared him fit to return to sea.

Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
