Lot Essay

This medal, to an unknown recipient, was the personal gift of Alexander Davison, Nelson's friend and Prize Agent, to all the Petty Officers who were present in the Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798.

Unusually this example of Davison's Nile medal has an additional clasp commemorating Admiral Rodney's victory over the French fleet, commanded by the Comte de Grasse, in the West Indies, on 21 April 1782. In this action five French ships-of-the-line were captured, and the Count made prisoner and sent to England. Admiral Rodney was raised to the peerage as Baron Rodney in June 1782.
