Lot Essay

A souvenir of Nelson from the collection of Admiral Sir Eliab Harvey, GCB, FRS (1758-1830) commander of the 98-gun Temeraire at Trafalgar. Temeraire's crucial role in the battle is well-known: immediately astern of Victory as the flagship broke the enemy line-of-battle, she engaged Redoutable's starboard side, and thereby almost certainly prevented the French boarding Victory He then captured the 80-gun Fougueux. For his gallant conduct, Harvey received the gold medal, a £100 sword of honour from the Patriotic Fund, and promotion to Rear-Admiral.
