BONAPARTE FAMILY
Four letters by members of Napoleon's family, including: Joseph BONAPARTE (1768-1844, King of Spain). Autograph letter signed to 'Monsieur', 'Pointe Breeze', 28 October 1819, 1/3 page, 4to (integral leaf removed, repaired on verso); Jerome BONAPARTE (1784-1870, King of Westphalia). Autograph letter to an unidentified woman ('Ma chere Rose'), n.p., 15 July n.y., one page, 8vo; Louis BONAPARTE (1778-1846, King of Holland). Letter signed (as General of the Army of the North) to Marshal Lefebvre, Nijmegen, '28 frimaire an 14' [19 December 1805], one page, 4to, integral blank; and Cardinal Joseph FESCH (1763-1839, half-brother of Maria Letizia Bonaparte). Autograph letter signed to Monsieur Pasqualini, Albano, 27 August 1822, one page, 4to, integral address leaf.
Jerome writes apparently to arrange an assignation, referring to 'Rose's brother', and to a reliable acquaintance, Molier, a friend of his own brother Louis. Joseph hopes to show his gratitude to his correspondent in Philadelphia, and Louis writes on a military matter. Cardinal Fesch asks Pasqualini to write, mentioning a letter from his sister. Jerome's first marriage, to Elisa Patterson of Baltimore, and their child, were never recognised by his family or the French government. His subsequent arranged marriage, to Catherine of Wurtemberg, proved happy, and she uncomplainingly shared the vicissitudes of his exile after the expulsion of the Bonapartes from France.
