Details
HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)

Autograph letter signed ('Ever my Dearest Emma most affectionately & faithfully your Nelson & Bronte') to Lady Hamilton, 'Victory off Lisbon', 24 September 1805, 1½ pages, 4to, integral address leaf signed (with initials, 'N & B'), small traces of red wax seal (small split in lower edge of first leaf and in horizontal central fold and upper edge of both leaves, old tape repairs on verso, not touching text, traces of mounting at inner margin on second leaf).

ONE OF NELSON'S LAST LETTERS TO LADY HAMILTON. 'I send you My Dearest Emma the very interesting works of Le Sage, have them halfbound with hollow backs that they may open easy You will find them the most interesting thing in the world for your happy pupils to read and refer to'. Further gifts for the diversion of the household at Merton include views of Algiers, 'the Consuls country house', and Capri and Strombolo, and 'three packs of cards which to those who know French may be very instructive ... make them put in money and they will soon tell'.

A touching reminder of Nelson's enjoyment of domestic and family life on his last visit to Merton Place where his daughter Horatia was at last installed. His niece Charlotte (daughter of his brother William), her brother Horace, and the daughters of his sister, Susannah Bolton, were also there. At Merton and in her London residence Emma, an enthusiastic educatrice, was preparing Charlotte for presentation at Court, with lessons in languages, dancing and other accomplishments. She now also undertook an active role in the education of Horatia, already a promising pupil. Letters by Horatia's governess recording her progress were forwarded to Nelson as he sailed on the Victory but were almost certainly among those which he did not live to receive. His last letter to Lady Hamilton was dated 19 October 1805.
