The circular tureen on gadrooned circular foot and with a vertically-fluted upper band, the two ribbon-wrapped reeded handles with lion's mask terminals, the rising cover with flat top and beaded border, with reeded and foliate ring handle, the stand circular and with two foliate scroll handles extending from the sides, with gadrooned and beaded borders, the tureen engraved with two coats-of-arms, one with a presentation inscription below, the cover with a crest and with the Royal crest within garter motto, contained in a later fitted case, marked on foot-rim and cover of tureen and base of stand, the base also with scratchweight '269"1'

The presentation inscription reads: 'The Gift of His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent'

The Royal arms are those of H.R.H. Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, K.G. (1767-1820), fourth son of King George III (1760-1820). He married Victoria (1786-1861), daughter of Franz, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1818. Their daughter, Victoria, succeeded her uncle, King William IV as Queen of the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Ireland in 1837.

The second arms are those of Captain Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, 1st Bt. (1769-1839), later Vice-Admiral.

Lot Essay

This tureen was almost certainly a gift to Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839), the celebrated Admiral who was Admiral Horatio Nelson's close companion at Trafalgar. He was granted arms slightly varying to those on the tureen on 18 January 1806 with the notation 'The Arms used by his family have not been duly Registered in the College of Arms and that such Registry is necessary on the present occasion [of Thomas Masterman Hardy being created a Baronet]'. He was created a Baronet on 4 February 1806. This slight variation suggests that the arms he was using and the gift predate the grant.
