JOSEPHINE BONAPARTE (1763-1814)
Letter signed ('Josephine Bonaparte') to Citizen Duquesnoy, St Cloud, '12 Prair[ial] XI [1 May 1803]', one page, 4to, endorsed by the recipient at the head, integral address leaf, laid down; EUGENE DE BEAUHARNAIS, Prince, Viceroy of Italy (1781-1824). Autograph letter signed to 'Bataille', Constance, 13 January 1817, 1½ pages, 4to, integral blank; HORTENSE DE BEAUHARNAIS (1783-1837, daughter of Josephine, wife of Louis Bonaparte). Notarial document signed (as Duchess of St Leu), Paris, 16 July 1814, 2 pages, 4to.
The former Empress and the children of her first marriage. Josephine, notorious for her exercise of favouritism, requests a situation for a protégé named Le Febvre in Duquesnoy's establishment in the rue des Saints Pères. Hortense's signature is on a notarial document issued by Claude Noel, confirming her as Josephine's co-heir (Louis Bonaparte adopted the title of the Comte de St Leu on his abdication from the throne of Holland). Eugène de Beauharnais, adopted by Napoleon as his son in 1805, abandoned public life in 1814, living in Bavaria under the protection of the King, his father-in-law. The present letter to a friend describes a journey back to Munich. (3)
