NAPOLEON I (1769-1821)

Letter signed to the Comte de Flahaut, Troyes, 27 February 1814 'a 7 heures du matin', including two words ('du brabant') added in autograph in the left hand margin of the 2nd page and repeated above in a different hand, 2 ½ pages, 4to (later annotation in pencil in upper margin on first leaf, very slightly browned at edges).
Provenance: Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne (1819-1895, daughter of Charles, Comte de Flahault de la Billarderie and wife of Henry, Fourth Marquess of Lansdowne); and by descent; Christie's sale of Important Autograph Letters from the Historical Archives at Bowood House, 12 October 1994 (lot 49).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PEACE NEGOTIATIONS AT LUSIGNY DURING THE CAMPAIGN IN NORTHERN FRANCE. 'Je suppose que les commissaires de l'Ennemi se seront rapprochés de votre ligne. Vous ne devez dans aucun cas leur céder des pays que nous occupons tels que Bourg, Macon, Chambery, Chalons sur Saone. Ces messieurs le comprendront facilement quel effet cela ferait il aux yeux des habitans qui se voient abandonnés'. If necessary, Flahaut may allow the enemy to keep Langres and Chaumont, and he may let go the Brabant line so that the enemy keeps Breda and Dutch Brabant. Flahaut had been appointed sole French commissioner for the negotiations at Lusigny. The settlement of the lines of demarcation was crucial to the opening discussion of the armistice, and Napoleon was determined to avoid conceding anything of Flanders or Wallonia.

Charles-Auguste-Joseph, Comte de Flahaut de la Billarderie (1785-1870), son of Adelaide, Comtesse de Flahaut (later Madame de Souza) by her liaison with Talleyrand, served with Joseph Bonaparte in Spain, and with Murat and Berthier, and from 1813 was one of Napoleon's most trusted aides-de-camp. In 1817 he married Margaret Mercer Elphinstone, daughter and heiress of of Admiral Viscount Keith. On his death his archive came to his elder daughter, Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne.
