Lot Essay

Murano has for centuries been a place of mystery and fascination, famous for holding the obsessively guarded secrets to glassmaking. In 1291, the Venetian Republic ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano, one of the islands in the Lagoon, because the glassworks represented a fire hazard to Venice. Murano operated a world famous industry of glassmaking which continues to this day.
