Lot Essay

A drawing by Thian of 'The Roman Campagna from the terrace of the Villa Medici', signed, inscribed and dated 'Thian a Rome 1791', measuring 19 x 35½ in. (48.5 x 90 cm.), was sold at Chayette & Cheval, Drouot, Paris, 13 May 2005, lot 10 (19,000 Euros).

Works by Thian rarely appear at auction and little is known of the artist. On stylistic grounds, the artist appears to have been Swiss, possibly from the circle of Franz Kaisermann (1765-1833), and was working in Italy in the 1790s.

Harriet Carr married Robert Cheney in 1799.
